		<description>Joelson Wilson are a small but successful firm of lawyers working in the west end of London.

Initially approached to consult on search engine optimisation for their existing website, Architype helped JW to develop an understanding of the science vs snake-oil debate surrounding SEO. This process eventually led to the full restructure and redesign of JW’s online presence and their approach to the web in general.

The website combines a simple, clean typographic approach that belies a complex tagging system feeding contextual content to the various sector, service and news areas of the site.

		<description>The Table Cafe is owned by the partners of Allies and Morrison Architects, and occupies the ground floor retail unit of the firms RIBA award-winning offices on Southwark Street. As such it forms part of the practice’s identity. An experiment in continued design influence post client handover.

The Table Cafe account is an exemplar in terms of the way in which Architype enjoys working with its clients. The relationship is one of partnership, with Architype involved in every aspect of the Table’s business, consulting on suppliers and menu development to the specification of ‘point of sale systems’ - future proofed to allow for e-commerce.

The range of projects and exploration undertaken in partnership with the table is wide and deep, ranging from signage - which has involved the design and prototyping of bespoke locking systems for the modular signage - to xml and indesign workflows allowing the menu to be updated daily whilst adhering to strict design templates.

The new website takes this further by allowing daily menu changes to be entered online with print ready PDF files generated by the CMS.

		<description>Part of a pitch for the redesign and development of English Pen's website this newspaper was an investigation of the existing site and the psychology of keywording.

Working in collaboration with Wired Canvas and Luck Laboratories we decided to explore self publication and further develop the brief through a programatic exploration of PEN's existing site archive.

The tag clouds compare the keywords uploaded by PEN staff with keywords auto generated by running the archive through the Open Calais semantic keyword generation API. The results were startling with open Calais, in the words of PEN Director Jonathan Heawood, perfectly encapsulating PEN. We found this to be an important insight into how people over promote the organisation to the detriment of the message when keywording. Sadly we didn't win the pitch but feel we put up a good show, learnt lots and had a ton of fun in the process.

		<description>Opera Unlimited produce performances to raise money for charity and run a programme of engagement with schools and other youth organisations including Feltham Young Offenders Institute.

Architype was asked to produce a marketing pack for an upcoming series of fundraising events, but it quickly became apparent that focus should be bought to the visual branding of the organisation first and foremost.

A flexible marque was developed that communicates the concept of unlimitedness through geometry and flexible application. The familiar form is both appropriate to the arts sector and opera specifically.

The graphic simplicity of the marque allows for its use as a window or a device to obscure and intrigue, its form can be further played with to communicate different aspects of the organisations work.

		<description>To mark their 50th anniversary, the Writers in Prison Committee of PEN commissioned a mobile exhibition highlighting notable cases from the last 50 years, including 2010 Nobel Peace Prize winner Liu Xiaobo. The exhibition, comprised ten pull-up banners, giving a short biography of the persecuted writers, a sample of their work and photographs. The aim of the exhibition: to bring the writers, and PEN's work as a whole, to a wider audience.

		<description>pageTracker._trackPageview("/Press Freedom");The visualisation of trends and data is a hot topic of conversation for NGO's and other campaigning organisations looking to succinctly communicate complex issues. Using raw data published by Reporters Sans Frontières and the Committee to Protect Journalists algorithms were developed to visualise the data in a way that communicates the changing profile of press freedom in the world. Bored with the standard Mercator world map projection, an unusual tetrahedral projection kindly supplied by Carlos Furuti was employed.

&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/30925/639362/A1_Posters_print4.jpg" width="670" height="948" width_o="1684" height_o="2384" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/30925/639362/A1_Posters_print4_o.jpg" data-mid="2973604"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/30925/639362/A1_Posters_print5.jpg" width="670" height="948" width_o="1684" height_o="2384" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/30925/639362/A1_Posters_print5_o.jpg" data-mid="2973611"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/30925/639362/A1_Posters_print6.jpg" width="670" height="948" width_o="1684" height_o="2384" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/30925/639362/A1_Posters_print6_o.jpg" data-mid="2973616"  border="0" align="left"/&#62; Visualising the 'change' in press freedom rather than the extent of that freedom reveals interesting patterns such as the similarity between the curves representing the USA, Iraq and Afghanistan.

&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/30925/639362/A1_Posters_print.jpg" width="670" height="948" width_o="1684" height_o="2384" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/30925/639362/A1_Posters_print_o.jpg" data-mid="2973587"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;
Plotting those trends as linear interpolations reveal unexpected results such as a slight increase in press freedom in China! although a cross referencing with the actual state of freedom in China does put that increase in perspective.

&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/30925/639362/A1_Posters_print2.jpg" width="670" height="948" width_o="1684" height_o="2384" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/30925/639362/A1_Posters_print2_o.jpg" data-mid="2973593"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/30925/639362/A1_Posters_print3.jpg" width="670" height="948" width_o="1684" height_o="2384" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/30925/639362/A1_Posters_print3_o.jpg" data-mid="2973598"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;
Sometimes raw data can be as compelling as clever data processing. Listing journalists killed together with the location of death, cause of death and other associated information presents a stark message.

		<description>pageTracker._trackPageview("/The Undrowned Child");'Venice is dying, strange beasts haunt its shores and an ancient evil has been awakened. Only eleven-year-old Teodora and her friend Renzo can save the city and fulfill a strange prophecy.'

Working closely with author and client Michelle Lovric a website was created around the magic book, which guides Teodora's hand throughout the narrative. <description>pageTracker._trackPageview("/Index on Censorship"); Index on Censorship is one of the world’s leading repositories of original, challenging, controversial and intelligent writing on free expression issues. Index on Censorship continues to log free expression abuses in scores of countries, report on censorship issues from all over the world, and add to the debates on those issues.

The Extremism issue of Index took as its central theme the legal reaction to the perceived terrorist threat post 9/11 and not the threat itself. The brief forbade the use of potentially ambiguous cover imagery - no Muslims in traditional dress or anything else that could be seen as adding to the hysteria surrounding this issue.

The solution was to create a typographic interpretation of the word extremism on a 'Guantanamo orange' background colour. The image on the back is the government evidence stamp taken from the infamous 'terrorists handbook' - possession of which has led to controversial arrests and prosecutions.

&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/30925/415774/batch 2_1.jpg" width="670" height="502" width_o="2048" height_o="1536" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/30925/415774/batch 2_1_o.jpg" data-mid="1843260"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;
The internet has created a new age in the battle for freedom of expression. The design solution explored screen icons associated with missing files, drawing a visual link to the X of index. Further reference to technology was made by writing all the cover copy in html code.

&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/30925/415774/batch 2.jpg" width="670" height="502" width_o="2048" height_o="1536" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/30925/415774/batch 2_o.jpg" data-mid="1843273"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;
The graphic language of protest is one of easy and cheap reproduction. Stencil artwork is one such style and pre-dates Banksy by millennia. The cover comments on the dangers faced daily by those reporting the middle east. See slide show of the stencil artworking here.</description>

Startup Architecture firm Softgrid wanted an experimental website to communicate their international, collaborative way of working. The solution was to create a database driven spring-graph which allows users to browse the relationship between projects, collaborators and Softgrid offices.
